MySql as been a huge component for indie software projects, contract web developers, and open source projects for many years. Having such a product under the control of a traditionally closed source company which also owns and operates one of the main competing products of MySql is a recipe for disaster and potential abuse.
If you generally agree with the above statement, go to helpmysql.org and sign the petition. Even if you are like me and have never actually used MySql, you can at least recognize that this is something which affects a lot of developers and projects.
